Because if they believed it when it didn't fit into their belief system, then they would have to admit that they had been wrong, which is something that very few individuals are comfortable with.

In general, human beings have a difficult time thinking outside the box. Most are taught one way from a very young age and changing that belief system is nearly impossible. For some, it would be like denying their parents... If mom or dad told me this it must be true... I've even heard because someone read something, somewhere a long time ago, it must be true... It's difficult for some people to open their minds to another way of thinking. Science can generally be proven... faith cannot...

People only ever believe what fits in with their belief system. That's why it's called a belief system.
Nothing is absolutely concretely true in science. It's only ever the most likely scenario. In religion it's just complete guesswork. Everyone on earth is wrong in aspects of how they think things are and they always will be. We'll never be able to know everything for certain. It's part of our limitations as humans. You just pick and choose what suits you and get on with living your life.

Addictions to anything are illnesses. I believe that God created the world. Being Gay or Lesbian is a trait that some people are born with. I don't know what to believe about global warming - but it could be that humans have damaged this planet so much, that it is their fault - or not.

Because the creationism textbook has the cute animal on the front. But seriously its not just science people will only ever believe anything when it fits into their belief system. Even actual different beliefs don't normally believe each other,

Most people only believe anything that fits into their preconceived notions about life, the universe, and everything. People don't take information in and compare it to their existing beliefs, and then toss out the least reliable version. People get new information, compare it to their existing beliefs, and toss out the new information if it doesn't match the existing stuff.

that question is hard to answer because if you have a belief that has certain standards you know what is true for yourself.
but also, it is from religion to religion different.
I don't see science interfere with my beliefs.
is there scientific (internationally accepted and agreed to) proof that there was a big bang; that gays and lesbians are born that way?
as for the global warming...I thought this was interesting:

Everyone has their own beliefs. I agree with some things in science but not all.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Nothing in the Bible, or any other holy book, has anything to do with science, so that should narrow it down for you.

Life is all about making value judgements. We didn't all grow up the same or have the same education or experiences, so our values vary.
