A pregnancy test will turn positive usually three days after implantation (but as early as a day or two after), but implantation can happen as early as three days after ovulation and as late as twelve days after ovulation. So if you do not have a regular cycle, you are pretty much screwed because you don't know whether you have really missed your period or when did ovulation and more importantly implantation happen.
However, many mothers-to-be start experiencing symptoms such as nausea, tiredness, back ache and breast changes around the same time the test would turn positive and even though they might not be fullblown yet, they suspect that something is not quite right.

two weeks after you conceived, usually the same week or a bit later than your period should have been. Some tests can give you results up to four days earlier, but not all women get good results before they actually miss their period. A blood test from the doctor can tell you sooner because it registers less levels of the hormone.

1 test you can buy tells you 5 days before you miss your period. You pretty much have to wait until you miss your period before the other tests will work.
