They feel insecure and as if they need to belong. I personally think that everyone is "fake". Everyone's influenced by how other's in their society act and they feel that they must act pretty-much the same way in order to fit in. I honestly don't believe that there's anyone who's "true". We all try to be something we aren't just so that we can feel as if we belong.
BTW: It's not a phase. We all try to be what we aren't throughout our whole lives. Many people have even tricked themselves into believing that they are who they're not.

Society has driven human nature to a point of insecurity with one's self. I think people hide beneath a mask of fear deep down. This allows people to fit in such categories. Now this coating of fakeness is so widely accepted now the fear is being alone. Therefore, people search for love and acceptance by surrounding themselves by others most commonly like them. People feed off of one another in a way almost unexplainable for instance if I am negative and I have nothing going for myself I might assume to surround myself by the same type of people therefore again preventing me from being judged. Someone just like you wouldn't dare tell you what is right because they are the same. This is the outer layer of fakeness most often encountered. Now that there are so many groups of this nature it's hard to catergorize anyone anymore as REAL. So take it for what it's worth.

They will grow out of it. It's a phase. You don't see many 35 year-old ganstas or goths, do you?
All (most) teenagers and young adults fit themselves into a category for acceptance by their peers.
They eventually grow up.

they just feel insecure, the don't like the way they are, with very low self steam...so pretending to be something else just gives thems a little more of confidence.
