now thios is probably a spyware or other malware using valuable system resources.
in windows xp and above there is a little utility that lets you see and stop any programmes you think may be eating up your resources. and remember the ram is just a little part of system performance, it also depends on your CPU if your system has always been slow with word then it may be that your using a slow cpu and not as one person suggested you grapics card. the graphics card only controls the refresh rate on yuour pc's display panel. a good way to tell if it's the display card is just watch the cursor in the text windows (open blank word doc or theaddress bar in explorer just click anywhere on the blank screen and watch the cursor, under normal operation this cursor should be blinking at about one second intervals (one second on & one second off) if that seems normal then it's likely your systems spu being used at an alarming rate.
so as i said above the utility that microsft ship in the system is taskmgr.exe
to use scroll to the RUN command on the start menu and type taskmgr.exe and hit enter.
this should open task manager. now you will see several tabs labeled applications, Processes, Performance, networking and users.
click on processes click on the heading image name in vista the label may be different this is the column that has all the open applicatons ending .exe, now scroll the list for processes you think you can safely close that will not stop your system working as a rule dont stop anything starting svchost usualy several of these svchosts running. you can stop things that are in memeory that refer to processes you are not using for example if you have a hp scanner and your not using it then you can shut down the files styarting hpg.exe, do not stop explorer.exe or anything related to you antivirus internet security programes. mdm is required only for internet access as are a number of other processes.
something you will see on the bottom of the task manager window is your CPU usage as a % if this is a low number and the commit charge is less than half of the maximum say around 2000 out of 700M then your system is not the problem.
if the above is not the problem only one or two other problems can be affectring performance one being your system is badly fragmented. the other being your system is low on disk space for the system page file (the area that the pc uses as if it were RAM) remember the system uses hard drive paging files regardless of how much RAM you have, As a general rule allocate twice as much to the page file as you have system RAM this should increase system performance a little.

Not a memory problem, its a graphics problem, you need a good graphics card, you see when you scroll in any direction the monitor has to redraw the information on screen, we tend to not think of that and see whats on the screen as just a physical thing but it is whatever resolution the monitor is displaying in, for example if you have 800 x 600 as your resolution that means your screen is made up of 480,000 small pixels, that is 800 multiplied by 600 the screen across x the screen down.
so in order to have fast scrolling you need to have a good graphics card to redraw and display the result in miliseconds.

Hi! I would check for viruses. Then try to free some HDD space. Defragment HDD. If doesn't help, then I would backup the precious data and restore the whole system. If that brings no results, then check if HDD is ok. Sometimes bad hdd slows down the system. But in this case, I think, most likely virus is the problem. gl

In most cases this is simply due to a slow graphics controller.

I would say that you have too many programs running in the background. You won't be able to see them unless you open your task manager
