Use heavy jump cables. Clamp the starter down to a bench or vice. Put the black cable on the casing of the starter and the red cable on the Solenoid battery terminal. Now connect your cables to a known good battery, red to + and black to -. Now using a small jumper cable bridge the red jump lead at the starter terminal to the S terminal. The starter should now operate. Keep your hands out of the way. It normally isn't expensive to get it properly tested at the auto electrician's if the starter has already been removed. You can use a set of jumper cables and a good battery. Put the positive cable on the S terminal that has the big wire going into the starter. Touch the negative to the case or one of the ears of the starter. It should spin up, dont let it jump around.

To test the solenoid hook the big cable to the B or battery terminal on the starter. Hook the ground cable up like you did before. Nothing should happen. Run a small wire to the small r terminal on the solenoid and touch it to the positive on your battery. Should spin up then.

That should do it
