This is just a quick very brief answer in lay-mans terms
the answer is an developmental fact know as divergent evolution. When mankind first stood up straight the apes remained hunched over. The pre-humans changed into us as we are now, while the apes continued to be content with their own way of life. The apes were not driven to change, unlike our ancestors. Why change if you are happy? As far as the apes are concerned they can make a living remaining virtually the same, while we continue to change. Dont think of it as "apes got replaced by humans and the apes that are around today as a mistake" think of it as Humans took a different path but are still walking parallel to apes. Yes the Apes did get stuck being apes, to put it simply.
Hopefully this helps

We did not evolve from todays apes. Apes and man evolved from the same animals but in different families.

Men did not evolve from apes. Even Darwin did not say so. This is a common misunderstanding. Darwin stated that Men and Apes have a common ancester. This means that each of the two species at a certain stage evolve independently, so one species evolving does not imply that the other must go extinct.

Men and primates have evolved from a common ancestor, but it is believed by evolutionists that some primates closely related to humans (chimps for instance) could evolve into humans in some conditions, that is to say, when humans are scarce, because humans would have to reproduce with apes in order to maintain the species. I know it sounds like a sci-fi argument, but it is theoretically true, it's what happens with endangered species, they breed them with a closely related species.

Personally, I think that it was a genetic mutation that made us different from our Primate cousins... or if I am to honour the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, our ancestors weren't apes but a bunch of abandoned and crashlanded stupid aliens, e.g. a compulsive bath-taking captain, telephone sanitisers, hairdressers, an over zealous soldier who waged war on the next continent despite it being uninhabited... lol

the evolving machine broke down, and so no more ape to man conversion, hard to know which is best the before or after.

We did not evolve from apes. We share a common ancestor. They went their way, we went our's. Which is better?

Another misconception ... the hypothesis was man evolved from a common ancestor - evolution is branching NOT a straight line.
