Uh, I'm not by any means the type of liberal that you're expecting, but let me clarify a few things, and I heard these on a right-wing station that I listen to 5 days a week (during lunch). There are at least 2 sides to both parties. For the republicans, there is the central core party and the far rightwing party. In other words, one side is still slightly right of the other more centrist republicans.
The democrats also have at least two sides; the old-school democrats, like the elderly people who fought in different wars, or their parents fought, and who remember the republican party when all people knew of them was that they were for big business. Then you have the extreme left, which is the one that some rightwingers want people to believe that that is all the democrats are. These are the extremists, the hollywood elitests, the tree huggers, the people who love animals more than other people, etc...
Anyway, sorry to do that, but I just wanted to clarify that. Now, I would not want you to become a far leftist. But if you wanted to be a democrat that hates big business, that wants to believe in the working man rather than the businessman, then I would understand that.

I am a democrat, although I am not quite liberal, even though 90 percent of Republicans would label me as a liberal in spite of the fact that alot of my views are conservative. If you can honestly say to yourself that the core values of the Republican party, irregardles of who is in charge, represent you for the most part, than you really should'nt change, if you are comfortable with this party, then remain with it. There are a whole huge list of things that the current Democrats piss me off about ,but at least I am willing to admit that sometimes they're wrong. I could give you a whole lot of reasons why I think the Democratic party is soo much better than the Republican party, but that would just be my opinions, and I don't want someone to change their political affiliation just because of my opinion. Would I like there to be more Democrats in this country, sure, but I would way, way rather, we have the same distribution of Democrat and Republican and have more people vote and make up their mind on what is right, and what is gonna do good for our homeland, instead of what some politician a thousand miles away says. Dem or Rep, we are all fightin the same battle against lyin politicians with alterior motives even though I believe the Republicans have more than their fair share. Just don't buy into the crap, we all want whats best for our country, we just have to have some actual dialogue on the subject rather than all the constant griping and whining from both sides. Hey I look to the right every once in a while too, and I won't deny there is a possibility of me ending up over there sometime, naa I doubt it. Just stick with what yer comfy with, me trying to tell you what to believe in, in this country, is like me tryin to tell you who to love or marry, it ain't my job.

well... let's look at what the "Republicans" have did over the past few years, they have the presidency and a majority in congress, so they can pretty much do what they want... dems haven't filibustered anything in a long time
... debt nearly doubled, Osama still running around with no real pressure on him, Iraq seems to be a mess, abortion still legal, nothing done on immigration front, huge tax breaks to upper 10 percent, Delay (major republican leader) stepped down due to corruption, CIA leak...
in short, conservative doesn't seem to be an idea the party believes in anymore... about all it does seem to have going for it is it is business friendly... so if you own a business, that's one reason to stay...
now, you probably aren't the type to believe in some of the basic "democrat" beliefs that I have... my beliefs are basically that I don't put money over people... and I think that you can help people and still be fiscally responsible... my main personal issue is health care.
with the rising rates of health insurance, more and more people have had to drop it, creating a huge hole where when people get hurt that don't have insurance can't pay their bill, because it's so much, the cost falls back on all of us with health insurance driving up costs even more, which makes more people drop it because they can't afford it...
in short the system is broken and more and more people who need help, can't get medical help, because it's too expensive... the issue soon will be "do you want to pay $500 a month for health insurance"... and at that point, a nation wide health care system will be much better...
my second issue is growing poverty and welfare reform... I think it's a needed program, but broken in it's current state... many Republicans seem to want to do away with the program all together...
these are the main reasons I lean to the liberal side... Edwards focuses on the issues and it's a big reason why I like him...

I don't want you to look to the left any more than I want you hanging out on the right. Join me in the middle. Let's funnel more public money to education, social programs and reduce the 500 billion military budget to something that makes sense.
Then let's stop the government from trying to control our lives in the name of security or someone else's religious morality.
Conservatives always say they are for less government and yet they pour billions into defense contractors hands and debate laws to restrict our rights.
Right now the conservatives are being manipulated by the far religious right, who wants everyone to pray in school (to their version of God) and wants to make sure we live the way they think we should live. Is that what you believe?
I believe the government needs to stay out of the private business of its citizens. We are a multi-religious culture and don't all want to be Southern Baptists, Charismatics, Mormons, or whatever version of the Christian Faith that is the most vocal today.
We liberal democrats cherish what our Founding Fathers created and we would like to see a government in place that respects the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the Laws of this Land.
After all, being a Liberal would put you in some good company. Ater all, our Founding Fathers were certainly Liberals in their time. Had the conservatives prevailed, we would be singing God Save the Queen today.
So you can thank a Liberal for the wonderful freedoms we have today.

Are you seriously considering changing your view point? The first thing I would ask myself is why am I republican and why am I conservative? Why would you be willing to change? Not that change is a bad thing but, most people are who they are and major change isn't going to happen withoout a ton of effort. If you truly believe in something how difficult will it be for you to change that belief system?
Most people would consider me a liberal because I believe in equal rights for all people. I believe the working people need to be treated fairly. I believe in freedom of speech even if I don't agree with what a person is saying. I believe that a woman should earn the same as a man in the same position; I don't really care if a person is black, white or purple as long as they have a good heart... I believe in people not Big Business... I also believe in a government FOR the People, By the people which is NOT how republicans and conservatives behave.

The war in Iraq is a evil scheme by George Bush to make money in the oil business. If one serviceman dies over that it's a tragedy. People like bush because he hates gays and abortion. The people who are homophobic most time are homo's believe or not. The people who hate abortion need a life, because they shouldn't care what women do with THEIR children. Anyway you asked this question probably because you question your party. I'm not apart of any party, but I support the people who have the best views of the time. I know probably you are a God-fearing person(I am too), but don't let sins like Homosexuality and abortion cloud your opinion of Bush. Man, the president isn't a good man. Clinton was 50 percent better, but he couldn't keep his pants on(I also heard Bush is cheating with Rice and has a Gay past). Anyway I know Bush is sinning because of his greed, so change my friend.

I would never want anyone to be either. What's best, in my view, is to know the difference between a good idea and a bad idea, not to be intellectually and philosophically stymied by being locked into a single platform-based frame of reference. People like that first ask themselves, "Gee, what does the rest of my flock think" before giving it their own examinations. Party-line conservatives and party-line liberals are equally malnuourished as thinking human beings. The American Eagle flies because it uses both its left and right wings effectively. It takes more work, because it demands the necessity of investigating all things in greater detail as an individual, but then what it makes you is a true and magnificent part of our Democracy.

I find most liberal democrats are usually well educated folks. They tend to think outside the box, they don't follow the crowd, they question the status quo and they tend be independent thinker. If you fall into one of these categories, you might already be a liberal thinker without even realizing it. The fact that you pose this question and identify yourself as a conservative is interesting. I am not trying to convince you to become a liberal, don't get me wrong. However, my point here is you should look at both sides of the aisle and choose the party that fits well with our moral and ethical belief. Good Luck, I hope you find yourself.

Well, think of it this way -- there's more than just Republicans and Democrats. Maybe consider not being labeled at all and vote for the person rather than the political party. Now one philosophy that I really like is that of libertarianism (the Libertarian party). Unfortunately, it's difficult (and in our society, nearly impossible) to execute.
So if being a Democrat hasn't appealed to you throughout the years and you're thinking of leaving the Republican party, explore other options. I guess I'm just saying that you don't need to limit yourself between one or the other.

It seems that liberals think things through more than conservatives do. They see both sides of a coin and they're more fair and just in their judgement.
Conservatives look to me like they have their eyes and ears shut! It's hard for them to accept new ideas and compassion is a word lost in their vocabulary. But hey, why care if you're the best?
