I had this thought in my head i know its probably not original but if its not that is ok maybe someone can show me how. i want to take pieces of my daughters outgrown baby clothes you know the special things and make a quilt. now i was thinking of a bigger square as the back ground and a smaller square in the middle with the baby material. now i have watched quilting shows and they just usually put sides on the square to make it look like a bigger on the bottom but is it ok to do it the way i said? oh and i have never made a quilt but have watched my mom for years and no i cant ask her for help. Thanks for any help.

that is very sweet!
Ok now what i have done is this:
say you have a dress or socks?
or hats? Now as painful as it is to cut them you have to depending on the size of the block.
say you have a flowered dress? the block has to be a solid color in contrast to set off the dress piece.
applique it to the block
cut the dress in half if you want to save the whole dress just make a quilt with colored blocks and use the front of the dress on the quilt.
then use the back on it too. .
plus a hat & her socks and her baby cloth shoes...
like a image of her [but it is only her clothes. ]
also you can make some nice wall hangings from them little quilts

Do you have a quilt shop in your area? If not, is there a JoAnn Fabrics or another fabric shop? The employees there will be able to give you guidance.

Some things to consider:

1) It helps if the clothes are 100% cotton. This makes it easier to sew, wash, and take care of it.
2) Make sure the clothes are clean. No stains or holes.

You can buy plastic rulers/squares and cut the blocks from those. Get a pencil or something that won't stain or run when you wash the finished quilt.

You may need a rotary cutter or a very good pair of fabric scissors to cut out the blocks.

Make all the squares the same size. Then, when you cut them, the blocks will be the same size.

Do you have a good working sewing machine?

Good luck. This sounds like a fun project.

t-shirt material is a rough fabric to start out with!

The way it stretches it tends to distort a bit. Your quilt won't lay flat if that happens.

Try to stick with the 100 percent cottons.

If your are using stretchy fabrics, iron a stablizer to the backs. Makes sewing much easier.

Lots of people make quilts from baby clothes. Check the internet for pictures. I think about.com had a clothes quilt a while back.

If you have never quilted before, this may not be the project to start with. A simple 9 patch is a great practice quilt. Clothes quilts.. I would give a rating of intermediate.

You may want to start smaller!
