When I look at modern music I seriously worry. Not because I worry about the bad influence they have on my kids, in fact the exact opposite. Where are the rebels? When did anybody last trash their room and throw a TV out of the window?

I agree with you - although it may simply be that I am biased.

When I was young, we had contempt for anything old - and certainly would not have any appreciation for any music more than ten years old. I remember the Billy Idol song "Your Generation don't mean a thing to me".

However, for today's kids, it seems the coolest things are retro and today's music stars are regularly acknowledging their debt to the old school.

I think that there is a reasonable amount of innovation in hip hop and dance music today, but as far as rock is concerned there is nothing done today, that was not done 25 years ago - and better.

I know, its all so safe these days isn't it? You get caught with a joint and people stop buying your records! My daughter is only eight, and pretty cool herself, but she and her friends think I'm cool. All her friends are polite, well mannered and don't get up to mischief, they range from 5 to 14 and all hang out together cleaning each other's rooms and playing nice safe games. I'm naturally really pleased about this, as I know what I was doing when I was their age! But maybe they have less to rebel against because we are so "hip", and would sniff out their dodgy doings in an instant.

i agree i am 30 next month .... britpop aside nothing has really happened since the early 90s, it is all just covers ... it is also odd to see students wearing 80's retro t-shirts of shows that they must surely not remember ... i feel sorry for them as have to pay so much that they have to count the pennies and get a good job in the global marketplace, no time for creativity or expression .... bring back debbie gibson the voice of a generation.

depends how old your offspring are and what they're into.
i'm 15 and like rock music, and am a complete individual. (am I "hip"?)
oh yeah I trash my room and throw stuff out the window the whole time, for your information!!!!(I can't throw the tv out the window cos we only have one and couldn't watch LOST if it was broken, also it's bigger than the window)

...Do not fear, we are still here.

I do not know what generation you are. I am currently 17. I listen to old music. I listen to The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Beatles, and Jefferson Airplane.

Kids are still mischievous. I have seen plenty of this sex drugs and rock and roll.

Every generation thinks they are the most "hip". Although every generation has their own word for it. . . . .
