woah- there are some major issues other than you knee here that go back before your surgery. you guys need to lay all your cards on the table and get out what's the real issue. then work on it from there. looking for sympathy on the internet's not going to help.

Speaking as someone that has had a serious knee injury. (Torn ACL ligament) Get off your lazy behind and work it out. If you sit and do nothing your knee will stiffen and it will hurt for the rest of your life. Not only that but you'll be limping for the rest of your life.
Strengthen the muscles around your knee with leg curls and leg extentions and what not. The Important thing is not to push it too hard so as not to re-injure the knee. Biking is also a wonderful way to rehabilitate the knees. It's low-impact and it keeps the knee moving without straining it too much.
My opinion: your wife is right. Sitting around can't be good for your knee. I had to go to 3 different doctors and 5 Physiotherapists. and they all said the same thing. Too much relaxation is not good.
If it hurts it could be due to not being used enough. Babying the knee isn't going to help you return your knee to how it was before your replacement.
I strongly suggest that you work your knee out. If you've done any leg curls before cut the weight you used to 1/4 or even 1/5 of what you used to be able to do and work your way back up.
Consult your doctor first. He might be able to suggest a better rehabilitation method Like Biking, Swimming, or even walking to begin.
But in the end, Doing nothing to help strengthen the knee is the worst thing that can be done. Even just moving around the house would be more helpful to your knee than keeping still.
Don't be lazy.

Sorry, but in some ways I can sympathsize with you and in others I cannot. I have 8 pins holding one leg together and major surgery on the leg and knee. Yeah, it really hurts a lot. Compared to some other major surgeries I've had, I admit the whole leg/knee thing was the most painful and really did take the longest to heal. You are about 5 months into it. I tried to keep mine elevated, iced and not over worked (other than PT) during the first 6 months because it was painful to use the joint.
That being said, I ran 2 businesses that I owned and were my source of income. One required being on call 24/7 for my rental residents. Since my office was on the second floor and once I got up there I couldn't do the steps unless it was absolutely necessary, I would drop the key down out of the window to clients, delivery people or others who needed to see me. You can adjust to having a bum leg, too. How about offering to fold the laundry she washes? How about offering to sit in a chair with your leg up and drying dishes she washes? How about answering questions on Yahoo with the intent of helping people and not being a turdlet? Start thinking about what you CAN do, protecting your knee from undue swelling and pain for your wife and children? Could you watch the kids while your wife has something else to do? No matter what you are going through, you still have something to offer, some knowledge, skills or abilities you can be using to make someone else's life easier or better. Truthfully, it was a year before my knee and leg started to feel "normal" but I still cannot kneel on it comfortably like I used to and my surgery was in 1996!

Try not to listen to the mean things people say on here. Talk to your wife as calmly and productively as you can. Also talk to your doctor to ask for tips on how to speed up the healing process, maybe some rehabilitative therapy. I'm sure you don't want to feel "handicapped" for much longer than you have to and it would get things back to normal at home sooner. February was a bit ago, but you shouldn't jump up and strain yourself if you are in pain. Just dont let it get you down. Talk things out with your kids...the best thing to do is to say "hey, I want to pick up the slack around the house, but unfortunately I can't right now and I feel like you guys won't appreciate me unless I do, but I can't change my situation". Let them know. I know that sounds a little touchy feely, but people respond better when they know you aren't trying to tell them they are wrong..but just saying how you feel. Laslty, your family has a lot of other needs besides just having the house cleaned...there are a ton of other areas you could help in to ease the burden for them having to do more chores. For your wife- maybe start a bath for her right as she gets home (if you can). For your kids- ask them about their homework, their day, serve their food at the table since you will be sitting. The little stuff takes time but not that much physical effort (If you are not doing these things already) I think it could really help your wife, kids and yourself to feel like you still have a major role in running the family. God Bless and I'll pray for fast healing and restoration for you.

Well....kind of hard on yourself there. However, being a devil's advocate what is it she's asking to be done. can you stand and do dishes? How about laundry? You can climb stairs can't you? I mean if she's asking you to lug stuff up into the attic or re-shingle the roof then hey man...you know your limitations. but try working at some of the stuff huh? It's therapeutic. For you leg and for Christ's Sake man...for your sanity. You keep sitting there and pain or not....you'll never hear the end of it.

She might be right - You don't need your knee to fold laundry or wash dishes. You can sit on a chair or up on a stool to do those things. Plus, it's a good idea for you to get some exercise, especially if you're overweight. Light exercise like that will help to keep that knee from becoming stiff or atrophying, will help it to heal right, and will make it better and stronger.

Get a job, sitting down, using a computer. In response to your question....yes, you are probably all they accuse you of being. However, I'd add whiner to the list.
People without limbs and with non-working parts get out and find jobs.
Good luck with that, eh?

MAYBE YOU COULD TRY AT LEAST ACTING LIKE YOU ARE TRYING TO HELP OUT AROUND THE HOUSE WHILE THEY ARE LOOKING.
HOWEVER, YOU SHOULD CONSIDER THAT YOU MAY IN FACT BE A FAT LAZY GOOD FOR NOTHING.
IF THIS IS NOT THE CASE THEN YOU SHOULD TRY USING THE OL' BACKHAND TO THE FACE ON THE OLD BAG(WHEN SHE'S NOT PAYING ATTENTION) AND SHOW HER THAT YUR STILL THE BOSS.

I'm sure you're not the only one like that. Hopefully your wife will come to realize that you need more time to heal up.
