I was curious to know if there were people of African ancestry living or visiting Serbia. I know for a fact there are several pockets of African communities in Russia.

Has anyone been to Serbia or no people know who have been there? And are Africans or people of African descent welcomed in Serbia?

There are some people of African descent here, but not a lot of them. It's mostly people who came here to study during socialist regime and stayed here and/or their children... I live in Novi Sad which has a University and I suppose there are some people of African descent living in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, but I think there are none or very, very few in other parts of Serbia...

There were 4 or 5 of them that went to my school and I don't remember them having any real problems. Of course, there are always fools who will provoke... But that is a problem every ethnic minority faces everywhere... Most of those I know of, have one Serbian parent, so they have Serbian names and are Orthodox Christians, and that's one of the ways of their integration...

But, still, it's an unusual sight in Serbia...

I suppose no one who comes should have any problems, except for the inconvenience of people looking oddly at them...

I was born in Serbia and lived there for most of my life. I can tell you that in Serbia you can from time to time see a person of colour although it is not an everyday occurence. Although the people living there seem to still think that racism is ok due to the lack of interaction with people of colour, they have started to be more accepting. Most people of colour will not meet outright racism. I just visited my home country a month ago and I personally saw tourists of colour enjoying the sites. There are people of African descent on their sports teams as well. That's at least a sign of improvement. Although Serbia is "behind the times" when it comes to issues with racism, a person of colour should not feel threatened to visit it.

p.s. I know one of the respondents said that Serbia is not that happy of a place...although it's struggling economically and certainly won't be stable for a while, it has changed a lot and has made great improvements and has made great leaps to improve tourism. There is signs in English everywhere for tourists and there are many many beautiful things to see and experience. And although the economic and political situations might not be happy, the people are!

I'm from Bulgaria...visited Serbia a lot, and there are very few black people there. They might be welcomed for the pure novelty of it, but don't expect understanding.
Back under communism, we had exchanges with some of the African socialist states, and that was pretty much the only black people we ever saw. Now there are actually fewer ...
Serbia is not so happy of a place. Why go?
