Depends on my mood, but usually I prefer Rowling, 'cause King can scare me silly.

I read some of Stephen kings novels a long time ago but gave up on them because they seemed to all be written using a similar formula and I got a bit bored with it, although admittedly I have heard that some of his more recent ones have been quite different and very good. I prefer Rowling personally because her story is highly original and offers a well thought out world enabling the reader to get drawn into the plot (I think this is why Tolkien's The Hobbit and LotR work so well also). Whether she can produce anything new after the HP series though remains to be seen.

Stephen King

At age 14 I read "Salem's Lot" and was sold on Stephen King. I have read everything except for the "Gunslinger Series". I now read much mystery but I have the first book of Harry Potter and LOVED the movie. One of my daughters was the consummate J.K. Rowling fan. We got her every book. She is an avid reader, a miracle for these times. Now, I mostly read crime fiction or actual cases. I always wanted to be a forsensic scientist but health problems killed that idea. But I have to say Stephen kind because you asked either/or. Good question!

Easy J.K. Rowling.

J.K.Rowling. Both authors have excellent minds. Comparing both, King makes me sit up and say "Oh my gosh turn the lights on!" While King is sharp and raw, Rowling is more subtle; she keeps me interested without disturbing my delicate mental state. No looking over the shoulder or listening for strange sounds at 3 a.m. I'd like to see Rowling do more writing in the adult genre.

I like J.K Rowling better because her imagination carried her from a nobody waitress to the top selling author in the world. Just think how many more brillant people out their dont get to shine because we dont find them.
