I have an Inspiron 8100 (basically the same design). I found this happening when a) the cooling vents weren't completely clear and/or b) I left it plugged in all the time. The latter will kill the battery which is why yours won't hold a charge anymore. Mine is completely dead because of this.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 and I have the same issue. I have another laptop at work that does NOT get as hot as this machine. Let's just say, this is abnormally hot and it has nothing to do with the battery either.
The only thing I can think of is to check the fan, although I hear it running periodically. I'm just worried this thing is going to fry.

My laptop bottom gets very hot as well. There is a solution to it though. I found a laptop desk made by Rubbermaid for about $15 at Wal-Mart. My laptop got so hot it kept turning off. Since I got that affordable gadget though my laptop hasn't overheated anymore. Plus its easier to type on now too because you can set it in an angle that is comfortable to you. That will help the lifespan of your compressor.
As to the battery, it is probably time for a new one. Or if you did not have it that long then contact the manufacturer or give Dells customer service a call.
Good luck to you!

Its normal for laptops to go hot, however, your battery should hold the charge for longer than 10 minutes.. that is a bad battery you have and if you recently purchased the computer, then change it. I guess the other question would be how long have you had the computer? The rechargeable batteries wear down eventually, and you would need a new one.. geez.. I am starting to sound like a geek...

The best advise I can give you is, you need a new battery, and go to Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy ect... and get a laptop fan that goes under your laptop (Your laptop sits on top of it), it plugs into your USB port, gives you back the extra slot for the USB you just used, and cost about $35.00. I use it on my laptop all the time, keeps it very cool, and I can keep my laptop on for hours without a heat problem. Just ask for a laptop cooling fan accessory.

because your hardrive is workiing overtime, while your fan is merely sitting at home on the couch drinking booze, most laptops will start to cooldown in a sec, but if your computer starts getting really slow, then you should shut it off for a while, also with most batteries, if you drain the entire battery, then put it in the freezer for about 1-2 weeks then bring it back to life, let it charge completely! then try it, look it up in google

You might need to get a new battery. And a lap top cooler. That would help out to. Make it run better. All lap tops get hot under the bottom.

contraptions that are skinny have a tendency to get heated up! The have a lot less potential to carry air, for this reason lowering air flow. many times in case of laptops getting heated, it relies upon on the utilization. even as the CPU utilization is very extreme, the flaws get heated up. there is not any longer something to be stressful about. merely ascertain that perfect air flow takes position. There also are workstation cool pads accessible, you could purchase one among those and use, it improves the air flow!.............. :) thanks for analyzing!

The heat is a combination of processor heat, power supply heat and battery heat. If your battery only holds a 10-minute charge, replace it.

You need to buy the external cooling pad. (I can't remember the actual name of it.)
