The proposal is official when he asks you, unconditionally and in no uncertain terms, to marry him. The acceptance of the proposal, and the ring, if any, makes the engagement official. The ring does not make the proposal, the question does!

Typically, it is when an engagement ring is presented and accepted because it tells the world of your intentions. However, there are some who simply can not afford rings (hence the whole experience of eloping). If that's the case, it would be official when the engagement is presented to a group of family & friends to stand as witness to the fact that your intentions are to marry.

It never is. It a big game that guys like to play with girls to get them to stick around year after year after year while they are getting all of the free pu$$y they can handle. Then after all is said and done they take back the $25 pos ring they got you and say that they never wanted to marry you anyway. So you ask when it is official? When you are married. It is like a "I'll believe it when I see it" type thing.

interesting question...
I'd say that a proposal is official - if it is possible for a proposal to be official at all!! - when it is made... How could it be any other way?

Proposals arent legally binding by the way...

It's official when it's asked not as a way to get sex, when the asker isn't drunk or high on drugs, and when the asker really means it.
