I love my laptop, I take it everywhere I go. Wireless is truely amazing.
I'm a kid from the 80's and I can remember the Spectrums, Atari ST's & Amigas, so pretty much everything these days amazes me.
Laptops are ace though (I have a desktop too but I never use it). Also I take my laptop round my friends and we can start wireless LANs, share photos, music, video, DVD. It's great.

Depends what you are likely to do with it. If you've got aspirations to do big visual/media type stuff, get a proper PC with plenty of spec. If you think you will just be using it for www/email/office and light media use, then get a laptop.

Performance-wise, go for a desktop. However, if you feel you will need it on the go, or if you are going to school or are in the corporate world, maybe take a look at a laptop. I have both, but I definitely use my desktop more often. It just depends on which place you are in life.

If you aren't going to take it out of the house get a PC.
You can have a bigger screen, you can open it up yourself and add hardware, the parts are cheaper, you don't have to worry about batteries etc etc.
On the downside you can't take it to Starbucks & surf while you Lattee.

Well - Laptops are nicer & neater + you can use wireless to access the web from anywhere..
Desktops - Cheaper,More powerfull, more robust (Kid proof)
You pays yer money & takes your chance... Play with a few & see what you prefer.... its just like buying a car - take test drive..
