The ball costs 5 cents or 5 pence depending which country you are in as you don't say whether it's £ or $.....

Think Slow: Some Benefits of Cognitive Reflection
Here's a simple question:
A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
________________
What answer did you give? In a study at Princeton, those answering 10 cents were significantly less patient than people answering 5 cents (yes, the answer is 5 cents - do it with x's).
OR
"A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?" The answer if 5 cents. If you don't believe it, consider two equations: 1.05+.05=1.10 and 1.05-.05=1.00

x = price of ball
x + ($1 + x) = $1.10 combine the "x"s
$1 + 2x = $1.10 subtract $1 from each side
2x = .10 divide each side by 2
x = .05 This is the price of the ball, add a dollar to this price and you have the price of the bat ($1.05) add them together and you have the total price of $1.10
(Having read some of the other answers...it's now clear why retail companies can't get their cash register drawers to balance at the end of the day. This is BASIC math folks.)

HAHAHAHAHA
its not 10 cents
put it in variables
say that the bat is x and the ball is y
x+y = 1.10
x-y = 1.00
Now add the two equations
2x = 2.10
Divide both sides by 2
x = 1.05
So the bat cost $1.05 so the ball costs .05

let cost of bat be X and that of ball be Y
then X+Y=1.10 and
X=y+1
therefore
Y+Y+1=1.10
2y=0.10
and Y=.05
therfore a ball cost 0.05

Forget the fact that this is obviously homework for a second, and lets try to find out more about this place with cheap sporting equipment! Where are you going to find a baseball bat AND a baseball for $1.10? That's crazy low.

a 100 cents more than 10 cents is a 110 cents if you added the two you'd get 120cents. 100 cents more than 5cents is 105 cents. If you add the two you get 110 cents. Is this an easier explanation to my geniuses saying 10?
