People require justification for their beliefs... When a belief is questioned, the questioner is generally dismissed out of hand or disproved through ulterior means. When it agrees with them, then it can become another tool to justify their beliefs.
Alcoholism and smoking are neither. It is a choice to indulge in a particular passtime, ones which just happen to be unhealthy. The same could be said for alot of things, from unprotected sex to eating too much chocolate.
Psychology classifies homosexual activities as a mental disorder, because of certain criteria that are met. However, society is changing to be more accepting of those actions so the criteria no longer apply. Most consider it a lifestyle choice, though many would argue the point.
Both. We are accelerating the warming process because of certain activities we take, such as green-house gas emmision and polution. But the Earth does have an eclipitical orbit; it swings back and forth between Ice ages and Heat ages, though the last 'Heat' age was far before recorded history... To keep in perspective, the last Ice age was millions of years ago... And it's taken millions of years to hit and pass the 'half-way' point.
Remember... Science is an ever-changing thing. New discoveries today disprove the laws of yesterday. Keep an open mind and realize that nobody can know the whole truth.

Science, is merely collected data.
Facts are facts.
Interpretation and extrapolation is up to humans.
We all know that humans are fallible, and biased, therefore not dependable.
What is scientific fact is merey data that has been shown to work in a majority of cases. It is an ongoing and self correcting process, and not a static thing.
Science constructs models that attempt to perdict the behavior of phenominon,on the basis of what is know, and can be extrapolated about any particular subject.
When the predictions are not bourne out in experiment, the model is adjusted accordingly, till the predictions work most of the time. There is never a final explanation till much mistakes are made in data correction.
That is why science for all of its axioms, is still the first to admit its inability to account for all exceptions to the rules.
In regard to global warming, there is facts to prove that our very sun is heating up,that is to say going through a period of intense(by previous standards)activity.
Now this is a factor that hereto fore was not figured into the global warming mix of data.Other factors also have perhaps more or less sigmifigant contributions to make to the global equation. With allthese uncertainties and variables, it becomes impossible to say what is the root cause of it untill more data is gathered.(that is the process of scientific study)
What we call science, after all, is merely the majority opinion backed by data that has been interpreted to indicate the majority conclusions. It is not, and never was an absolute or final waord on anything, for by its very definition it stands ready to correct itself when the data indicate that former conclusions are in error.

Science is a "belief system" also. Admittedly, it is one that can offer some outside verification of its claims, but since, for example. most scientists claimed tobacco was bad for you, but the tobacco companies were able to hire scientists that "proved" it was good for you, science is not as objective as many people would like to think. It is a way of looking at the world, and it has its uses, but the label "science" does not automatically equate to "truth". If it did, there would be no debates within scientific communities - they would all be able to find the same truth.

I find that alot of science is confirmed in the Bible. The earth being round, different time zones, seasons, tides, and alot more are mentioned or alluded to in the Bible, which was written years before they were discovered by science. The Bible is also the origin for modern medical hygiene practices. I like to think that science and my religion go hand in hand in most cases.

I find that religion is all about faith. To believe in a supreme being is all about faith. For a believer to go along with science, there must be much more fact.
Also, most people will argue with you until the end of next year if they believe in the fact or faith. It is there personal opinion. One the other hand, they will argue just as strongly against something. You do not have to be strong in faith to have a strong opinion
