What causes drooling or dribbling?

Babies wear bibs when they are teething because they dribble or drool a lot, Sometimes older people dribble or drool even though they have teeth.What causes this experience and what is the difference considering the difference in age?

We have, in our community, a man of 50 who has a profuse drooling problem. At one time this man was considered to be a genius. However, foolishly thinking himself invulnerable, he began to dabble with 'mind-expanding' narcotics. He overdosed and when he was discovered in a pool of his own vomit they rushed him to emergency. It was too late, parts of his brain had succumbed to the oxygen deprivation. When he came out of his coma, he had lost a great deal of his motor function. He is still a brilliant man, but it is difficult to understand him. The drugs that he requires to prevent seizures also leave him quite incapable, physically, of wiping the drool from his mouth.
That is just one experience. With infants, they drool because of an excess of saliva, particularly, while teething. The function of the saliva is that it holds an acid in it that softens the gums so that the teeth can break through. This subsides once the child has more teeth. Not all infants drool, some cut teeth without a whimper.

When even a little bit of water escapes down one's chin, it creates a "pathway" for other water to follow. It becomes harder to keep the water from taking this path.
