The tank might be too small. That can happen (the attack) when its closed quarters...that and they jump out and commit suicide.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. if it happens again then I'd forget having fish.

Damsels can be territorrial. I had 5 damsels in a 29 gallon tank and now i'm down to one. I did give 3 to a friend though because I wanted more corals.

Damsels can be very aggressive and you need lots of hiding spots to keep the fighting to a minimum.

I have to comment about the betta in the vase, yes it is cruel. Bettas need room like every other fish and they are meat eaters and the last time I looked plant roots weren't meat.

Some fish are made to attack and they should be in their own aquarium. Fish even eat each other. It's just a part of nature. nothing to worry about. You can't rally do much other than see how the fish react to each other.

Are you sure that the fish is a community fish. Some fish should be kept separate. Of course the other fish may have been sick, fish believe Darwin's Survival of the Fittest.

He needs to be by himself. You could get a tank divider or put him in a small tank. Some fish are agressive.

Tie them with a leash in their corners. Jealousy because one fish gossiped about the other.
