Because we are not mindless, emotionless automata that roam the earth desperately trying to reproduce. Unless you find it completely baffling that some people don't marry or marry but don't have children; this shouldn't be any more puzzling. Sometimes we have conflicting desires and needs.

I think this question confuses an individual's instinct for survival with that of an instinct for the continuation of the species. But I'll do my best to answer. There is evidence to indicate that homosexuality has a biological component. Scientists have created "gay" fruit flies. These fruit flies are attracted to the same sex because of a certain gene that they were given. Check the listed source for more information on this. There is also evidence to indicate that developmental factors play a role in homsexuality. I have read that there is some evidence to indicate that mothers who are under a great deal of stress during the pre-natal development of a child have a higher chance of having homosexual children. Also, abuse has been noted to result in homosexual behavior of victims later in life. Homosexuality can be considered not be abnormal because it likely occurs as a result of combined genetic and sociological factors. It may be less likely to occur than heterosexuality but it is by no means extraordinary. It is hard to see how something can be abnormal when a person's genes and early life experiences have made them what they are.

If a gay man and a lesbian were the last two people on earth, yeah I'm sure that they would mate and save the species in the same way that if you would eat spam if it was the only food available, regardless of your personal preference, since your survival would depend upon it. You might find reading work by Maslow on heirarchy of needs interesting, which should be in any gen psych text book (or online, I'm sure). In terms of your use of "normal", this is a word that is dependent upon the culture that you live in. Western, conservative, republican culture tends to view homosexuality as being "abnormal". Some cultures do not view homosexuality in such a fearful way, or see it as a deviant lifestyle. Many people have discussed why people choose to be gay, but do you remember the day you chose to be straight??

Survival of the species is higher on the survival priority list, sex is first, safety and well being of social units is second, attractiveness and resource accumulation third, basic individual survival is much lower on the list.
Since sex is so important it is also a social tool, another way of interacting with our peers. In the past societies didn't have this single sexual preference taboo, or a homosexuality taboo for that matter. It was once considered strange if you didn't have sex with both men and women. All of these feelings are still around today it's just that people feel uncomfortable sharing them in our society.

Your question helps to combat that guff that says people are born that way. People develop their ideas of what makes an attractive mate through their earlier stages of genderization and socialization. It could be the media, family, friends, or school has been the influence, which leads to people deciding to be homosexual, even if the decision is one that they never actually consciously make.

Well for one , it's not normal, and I'm not gay bashing either, just like its not normal for most births to be Siamese,or to be born ed club footed or clep pallet, and so on , yes i'm saying it's a defect and one day there will be a scientific explaination for it. A gene defect

From what I remember way back when I took a psych course, the only "instinct" humans are born with is to suckle. I may be wrong but what you are describing are behaviors.
