Submarines use a air ballist system, usually running the length of the watercraft along both sides. When the submarine requires depth (diving) these empty tubes (ballists) are filled with sea water, raising the density of the submarine and causing it to sink. When surfacing is required, the water is pumped out of these ballists and filled with air, lowering density and causing the submarine to rise in the water. To maintain a depth goes along the same principles; a necessary mixture of water-to-air is held within the ballists and maintains the submarine's current depth.
