My DSL connection seems to run about 1.5 to 2 times as fast as my friends dialup connection. Now I know it's that my connection is slow and not that his connection is fast. At home my cable internet runs about 20 times faster that my DSL here at work. Anyone know of a way I can increase my connection speed? I mean it takes me about 25 minutes to download 6 MB files. My home connection takes about 15 seconds!

Try going to dslreports.com and running the tweak test, if it says everything is running okay then well; if you have the splitters on your phone jacks for phone and DSL at the same time try taking those off, rerunning your phone lines with a solid wire like cat5e, replacing your ethernet cable from the modem to your computer, replacing the nic card, or if you are using usb, switch to ethernet, if its wireless, switch to ethernet :). There is a lot of things you could do to help a connection speed...

And no person above me, cable will decrease speed when more users are on, not DSL, why its a Digital Subscriber Line. DSL will see a speed decrease with distance from the transmitter..

Two questions: 1. Is yours the only PC on your DSL connection, or are you sharing? 2. What is the bandwidth of your DSL connection?

If you are sharing DSL, the problem could be either the router speed or the load shared on the line. If the bandwidth is low (as is often the case with low-priced DSL connections) you could be suffering from a bandwidth bottleneck. If your PC is the only one on the DSL connection, I would check into spyware and virus infection. There are, of course, more knowledgeable people who could offer more things to check out, but these basics might get you started.

For the record, broadband is faster than DSL. It wasn't until I ordered Highspeed broadband service from my internet provider that I noticed how slow DSL actually is.

it is running slow because it is a shared connection. others on your network are generating traffic as well as you and using up the bandwidth. my old isp was like that. i could tell when kids got home from school in my neighborhood cause as soon as all the kids went online it slowed to a crawl. late at night when it was not peak hours it was fast as a bullet.

Spyware or a hidden virus normally does it. download the yahoo toolbar and download anti spy on it and see what pops up

you may have a bunch of add ons on your computer. you can check under tools and go to manage add ons. or you may just need to take your computer to a profesional to have it looked at.
