I saw something on PBS that said that at the end of WWII, a great number of soldiers were, um,(not sure of the word) "let out" of the Army at a San Francisco center.
The large influx of young men meant that the gay ones might be meeting others like themselves, openly (at least openly for the time), for the first time. Naturally, they hung out together, met other young men, and before long, there was a gay (though in those years they wouldn't have been called that, and they'd probably have stayed pretty much under the radar) community.
The rest is history, and it (and other things, of course) has left San Francisco an absolutely amazing place to visit or live.
***EDIT***
I just remembered, it was about a 4-6 hour program on the history of AIDS.

I heard it was because Frisco at one time had the most famous DRAG club in America. It was like a magnet for DRAG performers who are mostly gays and after a while the gay scene took on a life of its own.
An earlier poster mentioned the Army processing center. I heard something like that also. It became famous so if a guy was discharged at Ft Irwin for homosexual activity he couldn't go home to Batavia Oh so he gravitated toward this place, Frisco he had heard of through the grapevine.

"Ding-ding-ding went the trolley, buzz-buzz-buzz went the bell, thump-thump-thump went my heart strings....." Judy sang it. What other place is famous for their trollies?
