Try the free version of AVG from Grisoft. It will work no matter what type of Internet connection you have (the two are not typically related).

Norton Anti-Virus has ways of being hacked on the computer, so I'd recommend McAffee Anti-Virus, a better version. Or AVG for free, or Microsoft's OneCare. It takes trying them or knowing people that have really tried them to know what will not work and what will.

AVG is found at www.downloads.com

Yes you need spybot search and destroy, and a good firewall, in addition to your anti-virus. You might try Zone Alarm if you're on a low budget.

My Norton Anti-virus program has been working great for me. It even has updates. You can even download it from the internet. Check into it. Make sure you order the Noris Internet Security program. It is excellent.

Spyware Doctor (this thing doesn't just destroy spyware, but malware, too)

You can do three types of scans, from a simple scan to a deep system scan (which checks EVERY file on the computer for infections) After the scan, if it finds an infection(s) it shows the name(s) of the infection(s) on a list. Then you push the button and it gets the infection(s) out of the computer.
You can download it at http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/offer.php?ref=google_new

oh, yeah, this updates automaticly, too

There are a number of good antivirus applications but that's not enough security these days. In addition to virus protection, you will need spyware, adware and phishing protection as well. Security landscape of the Internet has changed, most threats aren't from junior high school kids who write up a virius for bragging rights. Instead, most threats are for finanical gain (e.g. identity theft.) You are going to need a comprehensive package of security tools. I recommend you try a Internet Security Suites. Most major security companies provide suite containing virus, spyware and other malicious software protection. If you don't mind spending money then Symantec Internet Suite is a good choice. Please refer to a article on PC World which reviews these suites:(http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,125817,00.asp)

"All-in-One Security: Suites of antivirus, antispyware, and firewall software can provide convenient, solid protection against today's worst threats. Our tests of ten contenders show who's got your back." -- pcworld.com

"It takes a multifaceted strategy to fight today's complex range of security threats, which can no longer be neatly separated into distinct categories. Worms may ride in with spam, and spyware apps may unleash Trojan horses, so your PC requires multiple kinds of security software to stay safe." -- excerpt from the article.

There are free alternatives to these tools. A good place to start would be CNET's Security blog at: (http://www.download.com/Security-Spyware/2001-2023_4-0.html?tag=dir)

Another good website is filehippo (http://www.filehippo.com/). Look under the antivirus and antispyware categories.

AVG is good. They have a free version and a pay version (more features).

Norton puts a HUGE egomaniacal icon on your task bar and is constantly bitching about non-problems.
