Before you get an HR10-250 (which is a TiVo unit) you should realize that DirecTV will be coming out with their own model supposedly sometime this year. I don't think there is any concern that DirecTV will stop supporting the TiVo, but there won't be any improvement or upgrades for it. I'm sure it will be useable for years to come. HOWEVER, DirecTV is now using MPEG-4 compression for some of their programs, and the HR10-250 CANNOT receive those programs.

At present MPEG-4 encoding is used by DirecTV only for the transmission of local stations into the subscriber's area. Many people (like me) can receive local digital broadcast through an antenna, so I don't really need the MPEG-4 capabilty. I will get along just fine with my HR10-250. So, if you can get your local channels via antenna, I would go for the HR10-250 since they are available at a good price now.

Eventually, DirecTV says they will be broadcasting nationwide stations in MPEG-4, but right now no-one knows what or when, if ever. When and if that does happen, DirecTV is expected to offer to trade in your HR10-250 for the newer unit at little or no cost.

It really depends if you are an existing DIRECTV customer or not. If you are an exisiting customer then you should call DIRECTV and tell them you are going to switch to DISH Network and they will bend over backwards to make you happy and offer you a deal that no retailer can match. If you are not already a customer then I would contact your LOCAL DIRECTV dealer. DO NOT call DIRECTV's national sales office as they tend to not offer as good as deal as a good independent dealer will.
