It might be nothing. I'd offer a few things though. Depending on what you're paying - have him vet checked but specifically by a different vet unbiased. Listen to what the current vet says. The other thing is how hard you're going to show - if you're gone every weekend I think I'd have to think real hard about it. Aside from swelling how does the ankle FEEL. Get hands on it - is it (normally) mushy or firm or too firm? Do your hands feel any heat...a hot spot can pull you closer to the source of the swelling. are you showing AQHA shows or local open shows?
He will probably be ok...but look at all points and make a decision based on the facts not just the heart. He sounds like a nice horse.

Is the horse's name tobasco?.. Because my friend is selling her horse and that is exactly what is wrong with him. '

But yes he should be okay. However, if he does turn lame, immediatley take action and call your vet. I have a thoroughbred and his tendons tend to swell, plus he is only 5 too.. but i ice it right away, and he is fine afterwards. If he does come up lame, and doesnt get better he can still be used as a good pleasure horse, just not anything big. Good Luck!

I would get a vet check first, just to be sure. There could even be another problem the owner doesn't even know about. Chances are, the horse will be fine, especially for such light work, but it will be nice to know in advance what types of extra maintenance costs you might incur with any little problems like that. Good luck!

I would think as long as the swelling goes down and there is no lameness then he would do well in halter and pleasure classes because there really isn't any stress being put on the leg but I would definitely talk to the vet first to make sure he thinks it is ok.
