it happens every two years (euro + world cup). Because we won the world cup in 1966 we have expectations to live up to and every 2 years we have a "better" side. The truth is we fell we invented the sport (which we did) so we should be best at it. (basketball, baseball anybody?). Its just that we are a nation who thrives on meloncholy and the more we build our selves up the harder we fall back to earth (that bit just to the right of America). watch us loose to portugal on saturday, then read the Sunday Mirror or The Sun and enjoy the excusses. Oh yeah, that nob talking about the "culture", give me a break and visit england and see what your society is based on! no offence to you broad minded, "free" thinking yanks. Your limey friend. Dick
Peace!

Because newspapers want to increase their circulation and Television and Radio stations want to increase audience and advertising. It isn't for journalists to provide the best possible environment for victory, but to provide a desirable product for their customers and potential customers. The summer is traditionally quite slow news-wise, so big sports events get big coverage, and who wants to completely write off the "hometown heroes"? Plus why would people like Murdoch give a toss anyway? The Australian/American dingbat would be crying into his soup if he wasn't only interested in Chinese poon.

They should be the eight wonder of the world. More examples Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski and Jenson Button. Absolute Rubbish.

Because no-one wants to be accused of being unpatriotic even if this means hoping for a miracle plus they want to keep their readers/viewers who they may lose if they were not behind the national team all the way

By doing so it has built up a bigger national support, By making people who know nothing about football think they are supporting a winning side, My sister is trying to tell me Sven's tactics are all wrong!(They are) But she would n't know what a tactic from a tic tac if she was told twice!
it's all because of the hype!

Because they want to sell papers for a start! However, why shouldn`t we show pride in our national team, it gives all us Brits something to feel exited and hopeful about. If we lose, so what, there`s always 2010!!

what would you have them do, show no support for the team that represents their country?? i mean, they build up a rep for the team and you call them ridiculous, and when they totally tear them down and tell everyone that england sucks, you call them traitors and unpatriotic fruits.
