The store is called Pet Smart because its url on the internet is www.PetSmart.com The ' is just not used because it is an Url for a web site plus you don't really have to use any capital letters to go to a web site, so the company wants you to know its name by purposely capitalizing Pet and Smart, so it is a store for people who are smart about buying their pet their things.

I pronounce it as "Pets Mart' as it is essentially a shop (mart) selling things for pets.

These Marts don't make the Pets any smart, do they? The mart is intended for pets not smart too!

So, I prefer 'Pets Mart' to 'PetSmart'

Well, since I don't have a pet, I don't say either one.

I think the dual meaning is intentional ... it's smart to buy stuff for your pet there, and it's also a mart for pets.

Of course, if they sold drawings of puppies and kitties all tied up, it could be "Pet S/M Art" ... (ooooo, I need help....)

It's both! That's the gimmick. It is a store for pets, so Pets' Mart.
Also, it implies that you can be Pet Smart by going to their store.
