I know, it might be a common sense question, but I'm paranoid should I get rid of this computer that was given to me....(it's old too!) Any data saved on the Desktop will be lost, correct? And what about Outlook Express? Same thing?

Us poor answerers aint got a clue what you want to know here! Be specific! You received an old computer and you are worried there is something on it you shouldnt view? or You have an old computer with stuff you put on it and dont want others to see it? In any case, if you are worried, remove the hardrive and trash it....the harddrive that is.....
Lastly...do you mean you want to get rid of the data by deleting it before you give it away.....no it will still be on the harddrive and anyone who knows what they are doing can retrieve info from it. I hard drive is NOT erased simply because its reformatted! It is simply made to be ingmored and written over in a new op sys installation. I am doubting that there is anything important enough to worry about tho unless the computer came from some large corporation or bank!

Not quite clear on what you mean. You say "get rid of", does that mean throw in the trash? then no, no data will be lost, it will sit there on the drive. If you mean give to someone else, same answer.
If you mean smash into tiny bit or open the hard drive and destroy it, then yes, the data will be gone.
