The causes of pinging:-

Faulty EGR valve
Wrong ignition timing
Mixture too lean
Crossfire
Pre-ignition
Plug type too hot
Faulty Knock sensor
Oily cylinders
Excessive carbon build up
Wrong or stale fuel

4 things that can and will cause pinging, (1) low octane fuel (2) high timing (3) bad knock sensor and (4) bad or clogged EGR Valve. If you haven't changed the grade of fuel that you usually use and the pinging just started then this is probably not the cause, If you have not had the timing disturbed (advance the timing at the distributor)during a recent tune up than this is probably not the cause,It is very possible that your truck is not even equipped with a knock sensor ( you will have to check your shop manual or local dealership) and last but not least is the EGR and if I had to bet on what is causing it to ping I would say that the EGR is the one.Remove it from the intake manifold and check and clean the EGR make sure that the pettle valve is clean and seats properly in the housing if it is vacuum controlled check the lines and control module , if it is electric check all connections and refer to the service manual for the proper method of checking the EGR valve..

carbon deposits on top of the pistonsand valves ,use a good fuel treatment and go to a premium gas for awhile just to help clean it out.also get you timing checked,if its retarted it will ping also.

Probably low octane you might need to switch to mid-grade fuel, Fords really like that stuff
