Israel said it was launching the attack in retaliation for the capture of the soldier--the first prisoner taken by the Palestinians since 1994. But in reality, this was a pretext for escalating military actions that had already begun.
On June 9, eight Palestinian civilians were killed and 40 wounded in a bloody massacre caused by Israeli artillery shells fired on a Gaza beach. In another attack June 20, an Israeli plane fired two Hell-Fire missiles into a crowded street in the Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza. At least three children were killed; 14 civilians, including seven children, were maimed.
Israeli tanks are plowing through Gaza, no agreement will be enough to stop Israeli’s aim of starving the Palestinians.
This is all part of the US/Israeli Occupation, we fund it, and that funding should end immediately.

Personal opinion is yes a little. I don't think that taking the actions they have taken is just self defense. It looks like they have taken a page from our Fuhrers book, unilateral reaction to a situation that they did not even try to negotiate first. Not a good situation for either party. More turmoil in the middle east is not needed at this time. Lets all also try to remember that Israel does have some of the best trained commandos in the world so sending in tanks and aircraft seems a bit over the top.

I think thier response has been rather restrained. As I understand it, there has been a ceasefire agreement with Hamas for some time now. In the midst of this agreement, a terrorist group operating in Gaza with the blessing of the Hamas government goes to great effort to tunnel into Israel, launch an unprovoked attack against a millitary outpost and kidnap an Israeli soldier.
If someone did that in this country, I hope there would be a harsh response.

It's genocide - and "was there really an attack on the Israeli soldiers?" I came across the article below and it kind of makes the attack look not so real - please check it your self:
http://judicial-inc.biz/A_ttack_gaza_tunnel_2006.htm
Regardless, this does not justify the arrests of dozens of Hamas Officials (democratically elected even if the U.S. & Israel do not approve), conducting a brutal attack on the Ghaza strip, cutting off food, electricity to more than a million people, sending war planes over Syria, bombing the Islamic University in Ghaza, applying collective punishment...

You can read the story of 3-year-old Mariyah Amin who is the sole survivor of an Israeli bombing that left her paralyzed, and linked to an artificial respirator after the murder of her five-year-old brother, her mother, and grandmother. You can check the story under the title Israeli Justice: http://lefti.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_lefti_archive.html#114833033472833410
Will Mariyah follow the rest of her family now that the electricity operating her artificial respirator is out?
Please, I urge you to read these articles as well:

Is the life of Rachel Corrie less valuable than the life of the Israeli soldier? No retaliation to her brutal murder was taken against her aggressors for murdering her in cold blood for absolutely no reason.
We already "know " that the lives of Muslims / Arabs are in no way as valuable s the lives of Jews, but does this also go for the lives of Christians? Read the article below headed " Ultra-Orthodox Jews attack Christian tourists in Jerusalem"

Is this how Israel defends itself?

Well then, why don't you go over there and live, and see what it's like. You have absolutely no business making any comments about whats going on there, since all you know is what the media tells you. Go hug a tree or something

Maybe, but it apparently is also effective. Yahoo news just reported Hamas is willing to negotiate the soldier's return in order to prevent an invasion of Gaza.
Stay tuned....
