The price varies differently from company to company or person to person. Your best bet is to canvas around before making your decision on who you want to make your website. Do some bids or go online and check out some sites that caters to building websites as well.

Unless you are a professional graphic designer and a competent programmer then do not even think of doing it yourself! It is fine to have some fun with your personal web site but if you are serious about your business and you want people who do not know you to spend money on the strength of what they see on the screen then you need a professional company.

Prices will vary greatly but you should research some other e-commerce (online selling) web sites to find ones that you like and then see if the developer has a link at the foot of the page - most do.

Meet with a few companies and see who you think you can work with in the longer term. It should be an ongoing process not a 'fire and forget' mission so you need to be able to get on. Make sure your chosen company have experience in the type of site you want - you don't want to be paying them to experiment!

Costs should start from around £1,000 and then increase depending on the level of complexity involved. You will also need to decide if you need a Content Management System (CMS) to manage the products you are selling or if you are happy to pay someone else to make these changes.

This is not a step to take lightly and a good level of investment will help you to take it more seriously too!

Get a quote up front with all the details agreed in writing BEFORE you sign on with someone.

Now, what do you expect this web site to do for your company? Merely creating the site is not enough. You should be working with a company that treats your web site as a process, not an event they do once and then walk away from. Regular changes must be made to keep the site fresh and appealing to your visitors (and just how will people find your site?) and the Search Engines.

The web site is just a small part of your on-line presence. A real professional should tell you what other elements you need.

This is the most common mistake most people make. Instead of getting someone to "create" a site, find a company that can guide your steps and stop you from wasting your money.

Web developers have a nasty tendancy of ripping people off too... Which is sad. Make sure you get a developer who if your not satisfied, you dont have to pay. So many people have called me to fix pathetic things like images in their site linked to files on the devolpers hard drive and such.

However, I see 25$ an hour with up to 15 hours as being fair for your site.

Anything up to 50$ an hour is reasonable rates.

Custom graphics significantly add to the cost.

Because you have a shop site, make sure the devoper makes it flexable enough to add and remove product.. Yeah, I know, seems obvious, but alot dont.

you may think in the region of £100 per page, and yes that's a complete rip off but that is the general cost, you can learn Frontpage express which is just another applicaiton like word, excel, access, etc etc you don't need to learn html, hyper-text markup language, it is all click and choose not hard at all to learn, it has the buttons effects etc etc.
do it yourself, and bill your own company, against the tax, and have a nice dinner with the other half.

You can always do what I did... go to yahoo and type in the search "HTML LESSONS"- and get the basics down.

Then after you are familiar- there are many templates to help with this, you can "modify" templates to do what you want.

This way you don't have to pay anybody and you can tinker with it anytime you want to.

Good luck.
