You'll probably talk to the doctor for a few minutes first, while you're clothed. She'll want to know the date of the first day of your most recent period. Then you'll be given a gown to change into (actually my doc gives you a little paper jacket that opens in front and a big paper sheet to wrap the bottom half in.)

Once you're undressed and covered in whatever they've given you, she'll come back in to start the exam. If you have a male doc, he'll bring in a female nurse or staffer; it's your right to have a female in the room if you have a male doc examining you.

You'll lie back and your doc will do you breast exam and talk to you about doing self-exams monthly. Then you'll put your feet in the stirrups, scoot your bottom as close to the end of the table as possible and let your knees fall apart. It's hard to relax at this point because you feel very vulnerable, but it'll make the whole process smoother if you can!

She'll slide in a speculum and open it up a bit, then use a long qtip or a doohickey that looks a little like a mascara wand to take a sample of cervical cells. The speculum shouldn't hurt; you mostly just feel pressure. The swab shouldn't hurt either, although you can usually feel it. Then she'll remove the speculum and do the pelvic exam. This includes inserting two fingers in your vagina and using the other hand to press on your abdomen to feel the size, shape and placement of your female organs. It won't hurt.

You may have a brief rectal exam also; I have had gynos that do and those that don't. I've been visiting the gyno for 15 years or so and have NEVER had an enema, so don't worry about that.

Once the exam is over, you'll get dressed and the doc will come back in and tell you when you'll get your Pap results, ask if you have questions or concerns, probably talk with you about whether you're sexually active and whether you need birth control, etc...

All in all, it's a pretty quick process. It's nobody's favorite way to spend half an hour, but once you're past the first one, it's not scary. Just remember that you're doing something good for yourself by keeping tabs on your reporductive health.

There shouldn't be a rectal exam and DEFINATLY NOT an enema (who have you been talking to?). It should take all of 10 minutes at the most, the doctor will check your breasts (which can be weird), then your stomach, and then they will move on to the pelvic exam. This should be really brief, but it will still be uncomfortable. Make sure you tell the doctor how uncomfortable this makes you and they will help you get through the entire process and explain it step by step. It shouldn't be painful, but very uncomfortable at times. Just try and relax (as stupid as that sounds) and try and remember that this is for your health.

He or she will check to see that everything is okay inside and that your overies are fine. The gyn will check to see if you have any sists on your overies, which should be removed. Usually everything is fine, so there is nothing to worry about. You will not have a rectal exam and you will not have an enema.

If you are past a certain age (in your 40's) they will do a hemoccult test to see if you have any hidden blood in you stool and to test for early colon cancer. This does not involve an enema don't worry. You can also request to have this done if you have seen blood in your stool. You will also have a breast exam and a pelvic exam. The pap will test for cervical cancer, it's a little uncomfortable but don't worry you won't need to go home and ice your crotch!
