When I was younger, my mother and I lived in a old family house in a small town. Nearly every night, I would lay in bed for awhile (still awake), and then I'd start hearing very definite voices talking---men and women---almost like a conversation or sometimes speaking quickly, almost like a news broadcast. I would think that my mother had left the TV on and I would sit up to yell at her to turn it off. But the second I sat up, it was completely silent, no TV or radio was on, and no one was outside talking.
I've lived in quite a few homes since then and I have never really experienced it any place else. What are theses voices? Spirits? Residual energy? An ability to pick up radio signals? :-)
P.S.---Unless I was having an out-of-body experience, I was definitely awake and could clearly think, and see and hear everything around me---so I know I wasn't dreaming---especially when it happened every night in that home, but not in other places.

I think you answerd your own question. It was probably past energy of people who may have lived there. I use to experience that when I was younger.

sometimes the perfect position of walls will make a very exact point sound strange. so that when you turn your head or move you dont hear it anymore. the sound could be anything like wind.... if it resembled voices and you thought they were your mind could easily trick you into hearing voices... when you sit up. that sound isnt excatly the same and your mind shuts it off.... in your new house, that particular spot where youre head lies doesnt have any particular noise bounced to it
ps-theres no such things as ghosts..

It was probably residual energy, like a tape playing of old conversations that had taken place there. You are special, and have a gift for hearing this sort of thing.

People probably died in the house or it has been around for a very long time.

There have been several cases where old steam registers would act as radio receivers. no bull!

that is so weird...it has happened to me too but people tell me i must have been sleeping or imagining it. I know i have been awake when that happens to me. I wish I knew what it is or why it happens.
