AE, there is strong disagreement about whether there was any actual person behind 'Lenore' or whether she was a poetic construct. Check out knowingpoe.thinkport.org for a web reference; also look at the 'Annotated Poe' category under Poe the Writer on that site for more info on this question.

Good luck.

That's Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe (August 15, 1822 — January 30, 1847), born Virginia Eliza Clemm, the wife of Edgar Allan Poe.

Virginia Clemm and Edgar Allan Poe, who were first cousins, were married in 1836, when Virginia was 13. They were by all accounts a happy and devoted couple. But in 1842, Virginia Poe developed tuberculosis. Her health declined and she became an invalid, which drove Edgar Allan Poe into a deep depression. In a letter to a friend, Edgar Allan Poe described his resulting mental state: "I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity."[1]

Edgar Allan Poe's love for Virginia Poe, and the effect that her suffering and dying had upon him, are reflected in his tragic poems Annabel Lee and Ulalume, and indeed perhaps in the decline of his mental state in his last years.

Edgar Allen Poe wrote several poems that mentions young ladies. "Lenore", which was first published in 1841 is most likely influenced by his wife, Virginia. She suffered from a ruptured artery secondary to tuberculosis. In the poem, the character, Lenore, is also a deceased wife. You'll also see her in "The Raven."

"No dirge shall I upraise-But waft the angel on her flight with a paean of old days"

Edgar Allen Poe was a great American writer who was an editor of a newspaper, poet, short story writer and critic. He was part of the American Romantic Movement though his writing had a sense of the macabre. He also wrote crime and detective fiction. He was born on January 19, 1809 and he died at the age of 40. His death was due to drink, drugs and other agents to quote Wikipedia. He died on October 7, 1849.
Now for the second part of your question I suggest you go to this web site http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Raven. This will give you the information on both poems The Raven and Lenora. Good luck and good reading

The character's lost love. I don't know if Poe was actually married to a Lenore, but his first wife was a cousin named Virginia. It was probably her name he built the whole poem around. (Because it is a rhyming poem. Lenore, nevermore, floor, etc...)

It was his wife. Did you know that he actually died from Rabies, but back then they didn't know enough about it to catch it; they just figured he drank himself to death.
