Tolkien's Lord of the Rings

Very popular now... just at it was 25 years ago when I read it as a kid. Simply amazing work. I can't think of a story that equals it in the complexity of its woven mythologies, (fictitious) languages, characters and settings. On top of that it is thoroughly engrossing and just a great read, full of characters you believe in and love. Pretty much created the Fantasy genre.

I am not a fantasy reader at all... but this work demands praise

Tom Robbins - Still Life with Woodpecker, or Jitterbug Perfume
Chuck Palhinuck- Invisible Monsters or Choke

These authors are quite a ride to read. But they do appeal to a special type of reader.

They both have a tendency to be a little bit more "edgy" with their writing styles.

"Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo, the greatest writer to ever live. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is also amazing, but not as heartrending and hopeful as Les Mis. And by the way, I'm sad that anyone mentioned "Da Vinci Code" because seriously, of all time?? It was an entertaining story, I'll give it that, but some of the worst and manipulative writing techniques I have ever read (aside from "Pillars of the Earth" - another interesting story but BAD writing). Keep to the Jane Austen...

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The next one would be The Da Vinci Code. (I have yet to read Angels and Demons.)

The BEST book I ever read is "Alive" by Piers Paul Read. It really shows you how brave and strong human beings can be when a tragedy happens. It makes your pronlems seem small, and your complaints in life seem trivial when you read this.
