9-12 GCSEs including English and Maths at A*-C. People say 'oh I went later in life and had no GCSEs' but for an 18 year old the situation is different; most unis will demand at least those two.
To get onto A levels, Btec, or IB (the 3 mains routes to HE between the ages of 16-18), at least 5 of these must be at A*-C. For students who want to progress from 6th form to uni, ideally at least 8 should be at A*-C.
Some coursed (e.g. GNVQs) take more time and are worth more than one GCSE. Remember, however, that unless you want to do (for example) Environmental Studies, 4 GCSEs worth on that one topic might not be so good, because it would hint at a 'focus' very early in life, and limit her breadth of skills and knowledge. GNVQs are also not 'academic' so will not be so useful for traditional academic degrees- probably better for work-related degrees such as social work, nursing, ICT and so on.

well if she knows she very good then do all 9 gcse if she feels its alot then do 6 but she should definately pass maths and english because those two are a definate for any university then when she passes she just needs about to two full a levels and it can get her to university but hey theres always options out there even if she doesn't do well she can do a btec course 2 years at college equilvant to 2 a levels but say to her really work hard on her gcse s so she can straight away go on to do a levels then university because if she doesnt it takes time to again to do it all . good luck.

GCSE don't get you into University! AS and Alevels do. My parents didn't do GCSEs they just did Alevels and both have degrees and PhDs!. But GCSE are important, I would reccommend 3 seperate sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), Maths (Intermediate or Higher), English Language, English Literature, French, German. These are good ones. Go with the AQA exam boards, they are tough but very very good. I would reccommend between 6-10 GCSEs.

most schools offer 9 or 10 GCSE's but most schools will take you on as long as you have a grade c pass in six subjects (for AS levels) preferably maths english lit and language and the sciences.
then to get into uni if she wants to get into a good one it is ideal to have 4 good pass marks at a level which when she is taking the AS levels the school should be able to provide a few prospectus so that your daughter knows what she is aiming to acheive. obviously the better the grades she gets the better the uni.
