Hi- I grew up in Iowa, where much of the land is divided by roads that are exactly one mile apart, often forming a perfect square. They say that "back in the day", the early road engineers in the state of Iowa did this to help the farmers plot out their land and determine land boundaries. There are 640 acres per section of land and 1 section equals a square mile. Wikipedia has lots of info on land sections, townships, etc. Hope this helps you out!
