They are Box Elder beetles. They are in the early stage of development. Take a look at the links below and you will see. They are a hearty species and they like to live in rubbish and leaves in the yard. They are a nuisance and difficult to get rid of. I think they are the equivalent to a cockroach in the east. They seem to be only found in the southwest. They love the south side of the house, especially when it is hot out.

Or they could be a Soldier Beetle, they are red, too. Here is the link for that.

asian beetles.... they almost look exactly like lady bugs..... but they do bite

If they are really tiny, they may be chiggers.

canadian soldiers...i think thats what they are called...did it rain recently? they are attracted to water and humidity
