Because of the Supreme Court case Murray vs. Curlett ... that's the case where the Court took prayer out of school saying it violated the First Amendment.

However, for all that liberals talk about the First Amendment being about the Seperation of Church and State, the phrase "Seperation of Church and State" cannot be found in the Constitution or ANY of the founding documents. The First Amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Liberals are actually the ones in violation of the First Amendment because they want to limit the free exercise of religion.

My mom was able to pray in school. But now it's illegal. It's becoming where you can't say God in the public forum or post the Ten Commandments. How long before, they start persecuting Christians for their faith. It's happenned before -- Christians were stoned or fed to the lions. It could happen again.

Only in public schools because public schools are funded with tax dollars. Supreme Court decision was correct. It is no threat to freedom of religion. You are free to practice your religion. The problem was that school prayer was only christian prayer. Readings from the bible and the Lord's Prayer. If you want to pray in school go to a religious school. You do not have the right to impose your religion on other people.

seperation of church and state.

you can not force a religion on some one.
if you are muslim and you attent a school in america why should you beforced to play to God instead of Allah?

and vis-versa. people would get very offended,

im a liberal and people are going to say "no where does it say 'seperation of church and state' in the constitution, etc." can shut up for two minutes. im not saying that praying should be BANNED from school. just not forced prayer, which is what was banned. like the pledge. if people dont want to pledge their allegence to their country or a God, dont make them. thats what this country is all about.

people who say this is bad need to stop whinning. you can still pray in school. you can start a little prayer circle before a test if you want to. its just that teachers arent aloud to pray out out loud or over the P.A. you still have the right, so use it.

and dont cry about the persecution of the christian faith? what makes yours better than any other? what about the persecution of jews durring the holicaust by A CHRISTIAN! or muslims in the Middle east, or Hindi, Buddhist, all religions have had their time of persecution. this is not one of them, atleast...not for christians.

Because Humanist (aka deist or unitarian) and Athiest groups don't want people to be free to practice their religion in schools because they are offended by it. The truth is that neither teachers leading students in voluntary prayer nor students praying and/or reading their Bibles (or other religious books) at school is a violation of the first amendment as neither instance requires that students participate in those religious activities.

Even when morning prayers were standard in public schools, students were not required to participate. It is the very fact that they may be forced to witness others practicing their freedom of religion that bothers these groups. They are not standing up for the first amendment. They are fighting against the possibility of witnessing others practice a religion that is in opposition to their own belief systems.

Humanism, Athieism, Agnosticism, etc. are as much religions as are Christianity and Judaism.

"Certainly religious institutions, their ritualistic forms, ecclesiastical methods and communal activities must be resconstituted as tapidly as experience allows..." From the thirteenth affirmation; Humanist Manifesto I; 1933

"As in 1933, humanists still believe that traditional theism, especially faith in the prayer-hearing God, assumed to love and care for persons...is an unproved and outmoded faith. Salvationism, based on mere affirmation, still appears as harmful..." From the Preface to Humanist Manifesto II 1973

The only religion that offers "Salvationism, based on mere affirmation" is Christianity. This is a direct attack on the beliefs held by the majority of Americans, and Humanism (under the guise of being secular) is the religion being taught in public school classrooms.

I don't see the ACLU suing schools for teaching Humanism.

Because we are--thank G-d--lucky enough to live in a country with separation of curch and state. This is vital to the freedom to practice any religion or not at all. I am sure the Christians out there would not appreciate having to have Muslim prayer calls in school as mandatory or for those of us who are Jews we don't want to be required to say Christian prayers. We all have the right to practice each of our respective faiths without the fear of being converted or shunned. To the previous posts what makes it okay to say that Christians are being persecuted?! You are saying that we should have mandatory prayer...to a Christian faith...that's incongruent with the teachings of tolerance and respect that the New Testament offers. To force Christian prayer on all peoples of all faiths in school against the First Amendment because you aren't allowing others to practice their faith and you have an institution supporting a single religious authority--take the time to connect with G-d in church, at youth group, etc. but not in the school setting. We live in a Democratic Republic not a theocracy...hello, please recall the pilgrims here...just why did they move to America??!!! As for students gathering for prayer...great!...do it in free time but not during class time...have after school clubs, meet at lunch, etc. but to put education second is rediculous. G-d bless!

There is prayer. Every time there is a test almost every person in the classroom is praying,"God, please help me pass this test."

Oh..and for the ones who will be saying"First Amendment"..It says freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion.
If students want to hold prayer groups, they should be allowed to. With all the the groups in schools that are for only certain races, genders, and/or sexual preferences, I find it funny(not in the LOL way) that prayer groups aren't allowed.

I think its because the basic influence of EVIL that has turned our country into the material, profit deal, thus, the EVIL that runs the country has managed to reach its ugly arms out and sort of into the very soul of the "free will" of its victims/I mean citizens.
Because sneakers can be sold for $200. bucks a pair and Perris Hilton is everyone's "IDEAL", for the most part we are now in a GODLESS civilization and the last straw is to take God and prayer out of the minds of our helpless children in public schools, so they pray to the SNEAKER'S God instead. Perris Hilton is the closest thing to the Virgin Mary any more and as a child of the "Flower Children" I scream as loud as I can...PEOPLE REVOLT and MARCH the streets concerning these ABOMINATIONS! Like George Carlton says, "the government doesn't give a SHI*# about you or me!!!
Shame on you Government...Shame on you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Simple, radical liberals who have no respect for the traditons and foundations of this country. They want freedom of religion but they don't see that their "freedom" is just the opposite. I beleive the words are "the government shall make no rules abridging the freedom of religion" (or something to that effect). To me it's simple. If I want to stand in the middle of my school and pray for everyone there at the top of my lungs the governemtn has no right to tell me I can't. Not that I would, that would just be rude. But the point needs to be made!

there was never any prayer in school. Unless you went to a Catholic school or a Christian school and they can still pray. I just don't see what the fuss is. Your supposed to go into your closet and pray at least that's what Jesus said.

The main reason is that there is no one prayer that is broad enough to cover every single faith practiced in north america.
