Seriously (I know from a story my uncle told about my Grandmother who passed in 1947) ~ so that when and if the coffin is ever moved, it won't come open, possibly spilling the contents. Avoid a problem before it happens.

I have no idea, good question. I would imagine it would be to keep other things out. Our to make sure the body doesn't roll out when the coffin gets lowered in to the ground.

Coffins are designed to contain the body and all it's goo so it doesn't infect the living. Plus it's easy to bury, gives you something to hold on to while chucking it into the hole, and it keeps the worms out.

so that no bugs or anything else can get in there. but mostly so no one can dig them up and take the body or do something to it. think about that. you have to do that.
