why do people lie when they dont need to?

Lets face it: No-one is honest 100% of the time in what they say or do!! If they were, then this would be the business site known to man with 101 different questions of?????? Use your imagination!!

People lie for a multitude of reasons:

To make themselves out to be someone/something they are not.
To make themselves/their lives, sound more interesting.
To make themselves sound more appealing/desirable to the opposite sex (especially when online).
To gain a promotion or status.
To hide the truth.
To hide feelings or emotions.
To save peoples feelings.
To save getting into trouble & avoid punishment.
To avoid conflict.

Look at the list above: Now tell me you have not lied in at least one of these instances!! If you can or do... I will call you a lier!!

'Does my bum look big in this'? (cough) 'No Dear, you look great'!!

'Are you over 18'? (cough) 'Yes I am.. my date of birth is .....'!!

'You fancy him/her, don't you'? (cough) 'No I Don't'!!

'How old are you'? (cough) 'I'm 21'!!

'Are you sure you can do that'? (cough) 'Yes'!!

'Have you been smoking'? (cough, cough) 'No'!!

While there are people on earth: there will also be lie's!! White ones, grey ones, big black beasty ones... lies are with us to stay: as no-one can afford to be Honest 100% of the time... the costs would be to great!!!

Some people lie because they have a lack of a specific function, the "impulse control". Some lie because they have no self-esteem, and wish to be regarded on the same level as others they know. Some simply don't know any better, and some lie because they enjoy the drama and attention of getting caught.

most look at the world around them and give up fighting what they know is wrong. they see criminals succeeding, cheaters winning, and liars being able to deceive and prosper.
once a person allows them self the space of no doubt a
"white lie" is allowed, lies in general are not as hard to keep to.there are some people who never even know what the ' truth " is, they have written their own kind of reality by which their own way is always correct regardless of the truth of the fallacy it really might be.
people have nor ever will trust each other to be truth full at all times, but some..... the times they every spoke the truth may never had been.

People lie because they see it as a good. Aristotle will call this a false good. No human will do anything that they do not view as good it may be for themselves or for others, or a cause, but there must be a good. Now if we look to Kant he will tell us that lieing is self defeating, because if we all were supposed to lie, then no one woudl ever beleive anything so it woudl be pointless. To lie is to defeat oneself, but we still do it because we see an outcome that is favorable, because not everyone can tell a liar.

some people cant help it. I sometimes lie without meaning too. I just open my mouth and out comes a lie. I guess I do it to make sure I tell people what they want to hear.

i dont know but liars get butt cancer and thats the truth. i read an article about it in Liar's Periodicle (consequences for your dirty lies). i found it very informative and i never told a lie again. in fact i never told a lie before. it was my brothers magazine. hes the one with the problem

We don't. People do it, when they think they have to, even though they don't necesssarily have to, even though they think they have to. I know that sounds confusing. But the point is,they think they have to. I pretty much know if I will have to or not. I thnk, you can say the same, about you. But some people arn't so lucky, and they're consequently lying at the wrong times. Some even all the time.

Many people today have no moral compass, they were taught as children that an act is only wrong if you get punished for it. When right and wrong cease to have meaning, so does the value of truth.
