Hi Lila

I live in Puerto Vallarta so would be very grateful to have information if you have it about availability of wheelchairs here.

About the true American---I have been asked to explain that many times since I moved to Mexico. First of all I tell them that here in Mexico, the vast majority of the people are Mexican, Catholic, and understand and observe the customs of their culture. In the US everyone is from everywhere, different colors, different languages, different religions, different customs, ie they have very little in common, unlike most people in most countries in the world.

Lots of immigrants tend to gather together in places that get labeled Chinatown, Little Habana, Little Italy, etc. etc.

This of course, isolates them, and they don't assimilate readily.

Unfortunately there is still lots of racism in the US. A lot of "them and us". until generations are born and raised there. And they learn to accept each other.

And the government, still, I think, is the best in the world and it is corrupt, dishonest, and led by an administration that makes them disliked and distrusted by the rest of the world. This was not always the case and hopefully won't be for the next 4 years

American like to think of themselves as generous, they are not, the US spends less money helping those without than many countries. A lot of them are so focused on money and posessions that they have very little sense of what is really important.

Now, I realize that I have told you more about what American aren't and not much about what they are. I am an American, grandparents from England, Ireland, Scotland and Germany. My mother was Catholic, my dad was not. So, as a result I did not recieve any religious training. I have moved to Mexico and consider this my country.

So what is an American? There is no answer to that. They are individuals embracing whatever they choose.

I guess you could call that freedom!!

Do not believe most of what is written in these
answers. Go to the library and get a biography
on George Washington written before 1960
read it and you will see what a true American was. Or one on Alvin York After 1960 many
biographys on historical Americans has been poluted by writers to suit their biased adgenda.
Like the one above this who speaks of Pres.
Bush who the writer has a very biased opinion.

Now, that is a toughie. What does make a true American? I believe that it is someone with a national sense of pride, proud of knowing where you came from and who you are, proud of your family, proud of what this country has to offer, the good things, not anything related to war, what we believe in, and if we believe it ourselves: the truth of democracy, liberty, justice, and the American way, accepting our history we have endured as a country, and spreading these ideals to the rest of the world the way we are supposed to do it, peacefully. But that's my belief, not some concoction Bush and the government cooked up to bozzle people into the army. And my beliefs are pretty heavy, but take what you want out of it. Good luck with your report.

You'll be getting anwers to your question from all over the political landscape. So..I'll just anwer for my own self. For me...ideally..a true American is tolerant, open to diversity and loving to get to know people, invested in the value of free speach. And also..with a sense of humor...and a thoughtful mind. That's it for this citizen.
