Darien began to have dreams that he and Serena were going to get married in the future. There was a huge explosion in his dream and Serena was killed.
A voice told Darien to stay away from Serena. He was very upset that this happened, but he wanted her to live in the future.
Serena had the same dream later in the series.
Darien and Serena found out later that it was the future Darien, (King Darien) that told him to stay away from her, b/c if he didn't they would not have been able to come to Crystal Tokyo to save Neo Queen Serenity(Serena)

He was doing it to protect her. It was the right thing if you look at it but it was hard for him.

But if it's the first one it was because he started having dreams about them getting married and then Serena fell in hole and he couldn't save her. A voice (Which was him in the future) told him to stay away from her or something bad will happen to her. So he stayed away from her never telling the true reason why. Then one day she had the dream and understood why he avoided her.

because he was threatend by member of the negamoon to stop dating serena or else they would kill her.
