Because they are people...
Most of them can't apply themselves and see the affects of their behavior. I mean yeah, sure everyone knows the whole "Treat people like u want to be treated" But sayings like that can't be taken seriously because its known to just be a saying. Experience probably has a lot to do with it too. They might have experienced something that has caused them to behave the way they do towards others, or they have no experience in knowing what it's truely like to be on the other side of their negotivity.
They are that way for some reason or another, but sadly only those getting the worse of the situation take the time to think about the person on a deeper level like your question asks. I bet if something opened their eyes to notice their actions and think about it, just by learning more about their identity and answering "why am I the way I am?" could make them stop the cause of the bad thus ending the mean streak. But eh, like that's ever gonna happen :P

Well I would say Its because people are just mean in general. And if they see the chance to make you feel bad then they will. I have asked questions befor and get a lot of smart azzs answer they to. But that's just the way people are. But i really think it's mostly teens that do this. Because they need to grow up!!!

Because some people are moody. Expecially women in that special time of month. Also people dont really know they are mean unless they are expecting an argument or fight.

people tend to be mean or defensive because they think that people around them can hurt them in an emotional or physical way. most of the times is because they've experienced something before that made them think in this kind of way.
