Hmm...perhaps it has something to do with the emotional tie of a mother and child and breaking that tie makes the character more vulnerable than ever, thus making the obstacles harder to overcome and in the end, allowing the character to be seen as 'victorious' or 'going against all odds'...or Walt and his mother never got along....not sure. :)

I don't think they personally have a thing against mothers. If I was a mother I would protect my child from harm. That is what Bambi mother did. The same with Dumbo, his mother was pissed that they were making fun of her baby. But you see that a mother love is powerful and can take you on to your next step, even without her, she is still with you.

Disney likes to have a moral lesson, and yes, seems the mother disappearing is the absolute worst thing that can happen to a child, or deer, or fish, or elephant, or puppy, or ......

Disney has made a killing on movies themed with orphaned kids. It makes each character an instant underdog.

i noticed that too. I think that they do it to makes the female characters seem helpless so that the prince can save her.
