Its just all a bit pointless.
I mean, its cheaper to find the resources it has on Earth (shipping costs from the moon would be horrendous, even at bulk rate).
Its a lousy holiday destination.
And the weather is lousy - always close to absolute zero.
Seriously, on Earth people colonised lands rich in life and almost always with existing human populations (which were duly displaced). Survival was trivial compared to the moon and the riches - in terms of new commodities to export - huge.
Why oh why oh why would you colonise a barren lump of ice cold lifeless rock?

The point to colonizing the moon is not about resources, but more specifically about escape velocity.
It is extremely expensive to launch anything outside of earth's gravity. If you think about it...1 g is quite a bit of force, and it takes an incredible amount of energy to break free of that force.
If we ever hope to have a viable long-term deep space platform, it will have to originate from Luna. The moon can provide a more stable environment than that afforded on the ISS, with 1/6 the gravitational pull to overcome, not to mention you don't have to worry about the friction of an atmosphere to overcome during a launch.
Okay, so it won't be a nice place to build a summer home. But the moon is the key to deep space exploration.

There may be permanent bases on the Moon, like there are at the south pole now, but I would not call them colonies because nobody will live there permanently. The crew will do tours of duty but still call Earth home. It is just to inhospitable, no air or water, 2 week of daylight followed by 2 weeks of night, 1/6 gravity, radiation.

It's a good idea. And it need not create an Earth-wide economic depression. Just the process of colonization alone will create, directly or indirectly, millions of jobs. And, after the initial startup, we can use the resources on the Moon itself to propagate the colony.

Well in my opinion I think it's possible in the future but come seriously whats te point of colonizing it anyway its I mean the whole place is filled with craters and rocks and its grey it's like the perfect place for for being misirible.

the moon is small potatos, we need a whole planet, or three. the trick is gonna be changing the atmospheres, or creating them if need be. green house gasses might do the job. create enough carbon dioxide and then let plants do the dirty work, after that its just a matter of time. it is very possible just risky, expensive and timely

I think these scientists are watching too much television. When the moon doesn't even have an atmospere it would cost more money that would cause another great depression

I think that it is a great idea and that humans could colonize Mars too.

Give me a break! We can't even manage living here where we have all that we need! (without destroying everything; go see Inconvenient Truth if you dispute this.)
