If so, did they digitally implant the image of Anakin Skywalker at the end of the movie? I am asking because the Anakin that appears with Obi Wan and Yoda at the end of the film looks remarkably like the Anakin from Star Wars I - III.

I thought that was the case...I don't think that was necessary at all. He should have left the film as is. As many times as I have watched Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi, I did not recall seeing Anakin in that last shot.

Good points erikaextravaganza, but I would have rather them put a mask of some sort on Anakin or remove him from the final scene altogether than to put the new Anakin in that last shot. But from your perspective, I can understand why it was done.

Originally, it was Sebastian Shaw (who can still be seen when Vader's mask is removed by Luke) who was shown in the "Force Ghost" scene. However, for the 2004 DVD release, George Lucas did indeed digitially replace him with Hayden Christensen, who plays Anakin in Episodes I - III. The few seconds of footage were shot during the filming of Episode III.
Although many people disagree with Mr. Lucas' decision, there is at least one explanation. Think for a second about Sebastian Shaw's appearance in the original version. He had hair, he wasn't scarred. By comparison, when Vader's helmet is first removed by Luke, Shaw (as Anakin) is completely bald and obviously scarred. So where'd his hair come from? The implication is that the version of Anakin that Luke saw was what Anakin looked like before he went evil. It was, in other words, the nice Anakin - the good Anakin - the Jedi Anakin.
But in Episodes I - III, we see that Anakin never looked like that. Just before he fell to the dark side, he was played by long-haired Hayden Christensen.
So, if the ghost is supposed to show the "good guy" Anakin, it should really be showing Hayden Christensen as he looked at the beginning of Episode III. And now, with the DVD, that *is* what it shows.
Sebastian Shaw's smiling, kind, and not-at-all-bald Anakin, who was originally seen at the end of Return of the Jedi, never really existed. That is, Anakin never looked like that. Before Episodes I - III, audiences just assumed that it was young Anakin. But now, watching the films in order, the Shaw appearance would be kind of random. If it's showing the "good" Anakin, it should show Hayden.
So, when you think about it that way, it was actually a logical change for Mr. Lucas. But if you still like it the old way, you could always get the original versions on DVD this September. ;)

Just Episode VI: http://www.buycheapdvd.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/7214/subcatid/34441/id/204086
(But they only sell it in a 2-disc package with the 2004 DVD version also included, which is annoying if you just want the originals.)
Anyway, I hope all that helps. :)

Yes, they definately imposed Hayden's face in there for the new release of the Trilogy set. Now, it's unfortunate because the movie no longer shows Sebastian Shaw portraying Anakin, but I think, due to the fact that they had Hayden playing Anakin in the prequels in was necessary. Everyone who's ever seen the originals knows who the first Anakin was, but think of the people, children especially, who watch the prequels and then see ROTJ, I doubt they would have understood why there was a different Anakin there, or who that person was to begin with.

Yes, George Lucas recently ruined Return of the Jedi by doing that. It makes no sense since we clearly see that Anakin is an old man when Luke takes off his helmet.

Your spouse is correct. The long-established confirmed Anakin as a historical guy. If you hire the 2 DVD set you'll be able to see the long-established. They modified a couple of different matters just like the dancers in Jabbas palace. Hope this helped I love Star Wars !
