otherwise subject them to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.

But President Bush's signing statement said the president, as commander in chief, can "waive the torture ban" if he decides that harsh interrogation techniques will assist in preventing terrorist attacks.

Has the USA sunk to actively and publicly supporting torture?

Say whatever you wish about this, but I am a very firm believer in self-defense. Your enemies have to know that if they attack you, that you will unleash the pits of hell on them in order to prevent them from ever doing so again. We were attacked on 9-11. Why do people seem to keep forgetting that fact? If we are to prevent the radical islamist from succeeding in attacking us again, it is my firm believe that we should pull out all the stops. This includes anything we can come up with to extract information from their "foot soldiers". It all comes down to them or us. If we limit what our soldiers can do, our government can do, then we are surely doomed to failure. All our women will be forced back into the stone age, and all of our personal freedoms we like to throw into the air everytime a koran is flushed down the toilet or a terrorist is embarrassed will be gone forever. I wish everyone would just get their heads out of the sand and see this war on terror for what it is....a war for our survival. Period! End of story!

If hooding, stripping detainees naked, subjecting them to extremes of heat, cold, noise and light, and depriving them of sleep is so unbelievably horrible, then I think Bush should go ahead and condone it.

Do you even know what is allowed for a form of torture? Let me tell you, it's sitting a captive in a chair and telling him unless he talks, they're going to pick up the phone and call his mommy and then not let him talk to her.

Heck yeah, not talking to my mommy would definitely make me tell all I know - NOT

However, you do have a point. Some people have crossed the line according to global rules, and considering who these people are, it makes it very difficult to have any compassion towards them knowing they would kill you, me and everyone we know in a heart beat.
