I have a 7 yr old and a 9 yr old (both girls), and they would love:

arts and crafts
dolls/stuffed animals
books, DVDs, computer games
special interest stuff (like my 9 yr old would love science or gardening stuff, 7 yr old would love girly stuff like make up, "glam" outfits etc)

I think the arts and crafts idea is safest if you have no idea what they like.

Let Dr. Education educ_8_u:
Those banks from like a science store ( i don't think I can mention a company via this forum) where when you put the money in it and it tallies it for you ( I know not much challenge for this already lazy generation) and begin the "account" with a supply of each coins (i.e 0.1, 0.5, .10,.25,1.00[1 each gold Sac??? and the women's right] .50 Kennedy or any active coins I may have not mentioned). And maybe get it personalized.

Okay - Enough with the Barbies and Bratz already! I work in a toy store and there are so many other options...

-a jewelry box with a bracelet inside that has her name on it
-an "art box" filled with paper, markers, crayons, stickers, etc.
-a Webkinz-very hot these days-and a book about that animal(i.e. if you choose a webkinz horse, get a book about horses)
-anything crafty-ish

Just be creative and have fun with it!

If you want something good for her buy a brand new Barbie, but if you want something really great for her open an US Savings Bond (this is a special savings account that will accumulate interest and it may help your daughter have money for her college studies.

Anything Barbie or either a gift certificate to a store so that she can pick out what she wants. Or you could ask her to make you a list.
